The System's impossible equation

The legal profession has created impossible barriers for ambitious graduates and career changers. You can’t get experience without a job, but you can’t get a job without experience. Securing a training contract feels like an uphill battle that often overlooks dedication and potential in favour of existing connections.

At Bison, we see things differently. We’ve created a legal environment that breaks down those barriers. We don’t recruit with requirements for experience or expertise in our practice areas because we train everyone from the ground up anyway.

That’s why potential team members shadow our work in psychiatric units and care homes, experiencing the genuine challenges our clients face. They see the emotional demands, the complex cases, and the real impact of this work. Only those who are as passionate as we are about our work will become part of our team.

This isn’t about filtering people out. It’s about ensuring mutual commitment. When someone chooses us after experiencing the reality of what we do, we know they’re here for the right reasons.

A culture built on collaboration

Most law firms operate on hierarchy and competition. Junior lawyers are expected to know everything or risk looking incompetent. Questions are seen as weakness, and asking for help suggests you’re not ready for the responsibility.

We’ve built something different. When you join our team, you become part of a collaborative environment where asking questions is encouraged and learning is continuous. Our approach recognises that complex cases require collective expertise, not individual heroics.

This collaborative spirit is evident in how we work as a very close team whilst being dispersed across five locations. We share knowledge, celebrate successes together, and ensure every client benefits from our collective expertise. It’s not about individual achievement. It’s about what we can accomplish together for the people who need us most.

From graduate to leader

Your development starts from day one with comprehensive training that goes far beyond what other firms offer. We don’t just hand you cases and hope for the best. We build your skills systematically through structured mentorship and real-world application.

Our training approach is hands-on and practical. Senior team members work directly with new colleagues, using actual cases to develop critical thinking skills. You’ll learn to analyse decisions, identify strengths and weaknesses in arguments, and build a compelling case for your clients.

We also provide clear progression pathways. Our director-led training programmes prepare team members for panel member accreditation, while our collaborative approach means continuous skill development for everyone. Many of our current management team started here as graduates and developed through these same structured programmes.

If you’re ambitious, passionate about helping vulnerable people, and ready to take on meaningful challenges from day one, we’d love to hear from you.

Libby’s Story

Libby joined Bison as a 21-year-old graduate with no legal experience beyond her studies. Today, she’s Head of Mental Health, one of our Associate Directors, and has worked on cases that have brought about significant changes to mental health law.

Her progression through the firm has included taking on increasingly complex cases and achieving Law Society Accredited Panel Member status – eventually going on to lead a department that handles some of the most challenging mental health cases in the country. She’s supported long-term clients for over a decade and taken the landmark case of MM v Secretary of State for Justice all the way to the Supreme Court, doing a significant amount of work on it pro bono because, as she says, “the legal issue was just too important to leave.”

Libby’s journey from graduate trainee to department head shows what’s possible when passion meets the right training and support. Her story is not unique at Bison.

Libby’s Story

Employee-owned and proud of it

In May 2025, Bison became fully employee-owned through an Employee Ownership Trust.
What does that mean for you?

Everyone has a stake

When you join Bison, you're not just another employee. You're a co-owner. The firm's success becomes your success – quite literally. Employee ownership means profits are shared more widely across the team, not concentrated at the top.

Your voice matters

Being employee-owned changes how decisions get made. Colleagues have a genuine say in how we develop and grow. This isn’t tokenism. When everyone owns the business together, your perspective actually shapes where we're heading.

Here for the long term

Employee ownership locks in our independence. We're not building towards an exit or sale. We're building a firm that will be here in 20 years, still doing legal aid work, still fighting for vulnerable clients. That stability matters for your career progression and for the clients who depend on us.
